The tasting was followed by a Spanish-themed cold buffet evoking the flavours of Spain: paprika, garlic, sardines, chorizo, olives, serrano ham, oranges, almonds and lots more. Their ethos is to have a balance between indigenous Spanish varieties and modern wine-making with small volumes producing high quality wines. Master Winemaker Ed Adams presented 7 wines from his joint venture with South African winemaker Bruce Jack all of which were highly rated by the enthusiastic audience. Wines tasted: (1) Mateus Sparkling Brut Rose (2) 2015 Quinta de Azevedo, Vinho Verde (3) 2015 Quinta dos Carvalhais, Encruzado, Dao (4) 2015 Planalto, Douro Blanco, Casa Ferreirinha (5) 2014 Dusque de Viseu, Dao Tinto (6) 2014 Vinha Grande, Douro Tinto, Casa Ferreirinha (7) 2014 Herdade do Peso, Trinca Bolotas, Alentejo (8) Sandeman 10 Year Old Tawnt Port. Our buffet included some delicious Portuguese inspired twists. On this evening Charles presented a range of Portuguese wines. Recommended by Pierre Hourlier as a must-hear speaker, Charles also won the Louis Roederer International Wine Maker's Book Award in 2008 for "The Wine and Food Lover's Guide to Portugal". Today the area is also known for high quality Petite Sirah.Charles' past careers as a tour guide, security guard, freelance cook, investment analyst and opera singer were, in his own words, "the perfect preparation for co-founding Britain’s second consumer wine magazine (Wine International) and the International Wine Challenge (the best wine competition in the world". Furthermore, James Concannon and the Wetmore brothers recognized the virtues of the area’s Bordeaux-like gravel soils and dedicated themselves to making high quality wine from Bordeaux varieties. Wente arrived a few years later today the Wente Chardonnay clone is the source of a majority of California Chardonnay. Then in the mid 1800s, a man named Robert Livermore planted the area’s first commercial vineyards. Spanish missionaries planted the first wine grapes in the Livermore Valley in the 1760s. The Livermore Valley is one of California's oldest wine regions and has played a crucial role in shaping California's wine industry. This cooler evening air permeates the Livermore Valley's foothills, making this an ideal environment for the development of phenolic ripeness and concentration in its wine grapes. However, late afternoon winds cool down summer nights as daytime heat rises from the Central Valley in the east, pulling the cold, foggy, bay air inland. The name of the post office was changed on Jwhen William Mendenhall established a formal City Hall. That was until the Nottingham Post Office opened on January 25, 1869. The area remained nameless for some time, only land grants being indicators. Its time as a stopping point for the gold rush was coming to an end, and the town was starting to create its own identity. Some 25 years had passed since Robert Livermore had planted the first commercial wine grapes of the region and the town was in the midst of its renaissance. The 1860’s were a time of major development in this region we now call the Livermore Valley.
